Begum Hameeda Habibullah passes away in Lucknow.

It is with profound grief we ISMATIMES informs of the sad demise of legendary Begum Hameda Habibullah, Lucknow this morning, at the age of 101.

A former minister in UP government and former MP, Begum Habibullah was a great social worker and associated with many social and voluntary organisations. She was also President of Awadh Girls Degree College Lucknow.She worked for the welfare of the poor,downtrodden and the weaker sections of the society.
She is survived by her son Wajahat Habibullah IAS, and Saif Habibullah, Amar Habibullah,and large number of family members.

Sadly announcing the demise of Begum Hameeda Habibullah, a social worker who changed the lives of the poor, the downtrodden and the oppressed.

Born on *20th November, 1916*, in Lucknow, Begum Hameeda Habibullah was the daughter of Late *Nawab Nazir Yar Jung Bahadur*,the *Chief Justice of Hyderabad High Court*. She spent her childhood and her early years in Hyderabad. She passed Senior Cambridge with Distinction in five subjects, B.A. from Osmania University(Gold Medalist). She also did 2 years Teachers Training Course from Whitelands College (Putney), London.
She was married to *Major General Enaith Habibullah*,founder commandant of National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla. Her son *Wajahat Habibullah* has been a bureaucrat and former Chief Information Commissioner.

She joined active politics in *1965*, after her husband’s retirement. She served as an elected *Member of Legislative Assembly* (MLA) from Haidergarh (District Barabanki), was State Minister of Social and Harijan Welfare, National Integration & Civil Defence from 1971–73, and Tourism Minister from 1971-74. She was also a member of the Executive Committee of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) till 1980 and a member of (Elected) the All India Congress Committee (AICC) from 1969. She was also the President of Mahila Congress, UPCC from 1972-76.Thereafter, she was appointed a member of the *Rajya Sabha* from *1976 till 1982*.

Begum Hameeda Habibullah is credited with the noble cause of furthering women’s education in the region and she had been the president of the *Avadh Girls’ Degree College* (AGDC), Lucknow’s first English degree College for girls, since 1975. She was also the President *Talimgah-E-Niswan* College since 1975, a school with 3,500 catering to the education of Muslim girls founded by her mother- in- law, Late *Begum Inam Habibullah*.

She was also the president of *SEWA* Lucknow (Self Employed Women’s Association), an organization for upliftment & improvement of women employing 5,000 chikan workers.
She was awarded Yash Bharti, the highest civilian award conferred by UP Government.
