Amazon India signs MoU with Uttar Pradesh’s Khadi & Village Industries Board

Lucknow, February 20, 2018: In line with its vision to transform the way India buys & sells, Amazon India today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Uttar Pradesh’s Khadi & Village Industries Board, a Government of Uttar Pradesh undertaking. As part of the MoU, Amazon India will educate, train & enable rural khadi artisans to directly sell their products to Amazon.in customers across the country. The portfolio online will include products such as khadi shirts, kurtas, dhotis, towels and gourmet food which hasa tremendous potential and demand in urban areas.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, textiles and apparel sector has made a significant contribution by providing both direct and indirect employment to almost 35 and 50 million Indians respectively, making it the largest employment sector after agriculture. This makes Khadi an even more important focus segment. Moreover, with the world moving towards natural and eco-friendly products there is an increasing demand for bio-degradable and organic products. Through this partnership, Amazon India and Uttar Pradesh Khadi & Village Industries Board intend to empower and generate livelihood opportunities and income for the rural artisans and boost the economy of the Khadi and Village industry. By bolstering digital connectivity of the artisans community, this collaboration will help them be a part of and benefit from India’s booming digital economy. With the option of selling products online, rural artisans will be able to expand their reach, fetch an appropriate price for their unique products, which in-turn will help raise their overall standard of living.
Close to 80% of the rural population in Uttar Pradesh is dependent on agriculture to whomKhadiis another sourcethat can further increase their income and employment by using the available raw material. Amazon India, as part of the pilot, started conducting work shops since October 2017 in collaboration with Khadi Board to educate Khadi Societies and Village Industries in multiple locations such as Kanpur, Varanasi, Ghaziabad and Lucknow on e-marketing and online selling. Amazon India has conducted workshops for over 150 societies and has started onboarding artisans on the marketplace. Through the partnership,8 Khadisocieties impacting many rural artisans are currently active on Amazon.in showcasing 400+ products.

There are thousands of weavers and artisans who bring this craft to life through their skills. Amazon India, over the course of one year, has partnered with various government bodies like DC Handloom, Ministry of Textiles, The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development of India (TRIFED), Government of Telangana, Government of Nagaland and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), Gujarat Tribal Development Departmentto supplement the efforts of the government to uplift artisans & SMEs across the country. The company has created specialized training modules, conducted workshops with on-ground staff and shared learning resources to help them start & grow their businesses online.

For the overall development of Khadi and Village industry, The Uttar Pradesh Khadi& Village Industries Board was constituted as an advisory body under Uttar Pradesh Khadi Village Industry Act 10, 1960.Thereafter, above act was modified by Khadi Village Industry Board act number 64, 1966 which gave the Board the authority to implement the schemes of Khadi and Village industry in the state. Thus, Khadi and Village Industry Board were reorganized as an autonomous institution.
